This is a sauce that gives a little back. Born of a collaboration between Small Axe Peppers LLC and GrowNYC, the sauce is made with Serrano Peppers from Greenmarket farms and Bronx community gardens. Purchases support local communities and local farms. Greenmarket farms delivers the pepper seedlings to the community gardens who grow the peppers. Subsequently, the farm purchases the pepper harvest for the creation of this sauce.
This Serrano-based hot sauce has a nice amount of heat due to the additional punch the Serrano Peppers deliver over more ubiquitous Jalapenos. Initially, you notice the tang of the Apple Cider Vinegar along with some sweetness. Then, the full flavor of Serrano Peppers wash over your tongue and is quickly followed by fairly bold flavors of Garlic and Onion. It’s pretty heavy on the Garlic which we liked. Finally, a moderate saltiness is noticed rounding out the entire sauce.
The balance of ingredients in this sauce is excellent. On a heat scale of 0-5, this sauce ranks in the high 2s to low 3s.
